John Wick Chapter 2 picks up pretty much where the first film left off. He avenged his dog, and now he’s on a rampage to get back his car. This is only the opening of the film, of course. What the retired assassin actually gets, of course, is dragged deeper back into the world of killing for hire.
As it turns out, John owes someone a favor, and without getting into serious spoiler territory, that favor spirals into something that pulls him out of retirement, no matter what he wants.
Chapter 2 brings back everything about the first film that audiences loved: the fight scenes are a lot of fun, the characters are so out there that you can’t help but love them all, and the world of hit men is just so engrossing that you always want to know more.
World building is something that this films delves into, more so than the first movie. We learn more about the Continental, who runs the world of assassins, and which factions are secretly fighting with one another. It turns out this underground world of killers is much more complex than a simple hotel and some mysterious gold coins.
We also get to see Keanu Reeves and Lawrence Fishburne reunited once more! It’s so great to see the two of them on screen together, especially since the characters they play are so different from Neo and Morpheus. It’s a completely different relationship, and one that I think viewers will enjoy, especially if they are interested in the aforementioned world building.
Ruby Rose as the mute Ares is another stand out performance—she may not say anything, but that stop her from being a total badass. Plus, I can’t recall the last time I saw sign language in an action film, and it once again gives the movie an opportunity to utilize the comic book-esque subtitles that makes this franchise so unique. Cassian, played by Common, is also a lot of fun as probably one of the only characters who can go toe-to-toe with John Wick, and their extended fight scenes (down a staircase! In a hallway! On a train!) are sure to entertain.
In short, if you liked the first chapter, you’ll absolutely love Chapter 2 and will find yourself wanting even more from this series.
