4 Ways to Wear Your Favourite Book

Nikita Shah March 5, 2013 15

Fashion is a great form of expression. We love to deck ourselves out in things that reflect who we are and what we love, and we — the nerds — love books. It’s not always the easiest thing to express in clothing and accessories. Here are a few ways to incorporate some really unique pieces into your wardrobe to express your love of the literary:

1. Litograph T-Shirts

Starting as a Kickstarter, Litograph creates T-shirts and posters made entirely out of the words of books. They use up to 75,000 words of a book to create the unique all-over pattern and all of the words are legible. The T-shirts come in unisex crew neck or ladies deep-v neckline. This makes for a really unique T-shirt and an awesome conversation-starter!

2. Book Purses

The idea of a book purse rubs some people the wrong way. It’s using actual covers of books to create purses. While many vendors create these purses, I like the collection from NovelCreations on Etsy. The creator, Karen, gets lightly used books from flea markets, used book stores, and garage sales to make these eye-catching purses. The inside pages are then recycled. You also have up to four options for your handle style, and up to two for the fabric lining. If you’re okay with the use of actual books to make these pieces, it’s a great way to show your love of books.

3. Printed Scarves

By printing onto square fabric, vendor Tori Tissell creates these beautiful infinity scarves. They’re really chic and sophisticated and great for everyday wear! She only takes a few custom orders at a time — the next opening will be March 6 at 3PM PST. Try your luck to get your favourite book!

4. Charms

Etsy is a gold mine for book lovers’ jewelry. And if you’re a fan of cover art, then you might want to go the way of the book charms! There are several vendors who will sell jewelry with the covers on them. A couple favourites of mine include:

Sparkle Labs — currently on vacation. The book cover lockets are really sweet and with the little space for photos, it’s a wonderful idea if you share a book bond with a special someone. Okay? Okay.

Authored Adornments — because a person’s favourite quote can say a lot about them.

Sophie’s Beads — Created from flexible plastic, these little book charms are totally waterproof. You can get a themed charm bracelet or contact Sophie for a custom set!

Those are beautiful! I’ll have to go back when the vendor is back from vacation to check out the whole shop!

The way I rationalize book purses is that if someone is buying a book and then re-purposing it – the author (or whoever holds their estate) is still getting royalties so the only down side is that it’s no longer readable.

The Litograph shirts are so cool! I wish they took custom orders…I would proooobably have one made for all of my favorite books. :B

Oh, BookBagz here in Toronto does the same thing with books as purses… I saw them this past fall at the Cabbagetown Arts and Crafts Festival but have no idea if they’re still open for business…

  • arielletje

    Oooh, that’s really cool!

If the whole using a book to make a purse thing really gets on your wrong side, Kate Spade has a collection of really cute clutches that look like books but aren’t actually made of books!

OMG, really?? Are they like 1k each, though? :P

    • nikitonium

I didn’t know about that – thanks for sharing!

I want a Litograph shirt SO BAD. But which book?

I’m torn between Alice and Sherlock. I like Sherlock Holmes better but I like the pattern of the Alice t-shirt better.
