The past Fan Expo was my first time going to a convention. I see photos and hear stories from my friends who go and I was lucky enough to go with the Paper Droids team this year. The weekend was a blur of comic books, panels, cosplays, video games, and general awesomeness. I can’t possibly write a coherent overview, so here are a few impressions I left with:
- We nerds are a welcoming bunch; it’s incredibly easy to make friends.
- Panels are not as loud and fuzzy as YouTube videos suggest.
- If you have a press pass, they basically let you do anything you want.
- Wear comfortable shoes – there is no exaggerating the amount of walking you do.
- Carry a backpack if you can. There’s more room and it won’t leave you with sore shoulders.
- Save up before you go, as you will want to buy everything you see.
- It’s ok if you suck at a video game because someone else will suck worse.
- Plan your events out the day before so you don’t miss anything.
- Specific to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre: get walkie-talkies because the cell reception sucks.
- Never ever growl at Darth Nihilus.
