Fangirl Friday: Asami Sato

This article contains spoilers for Legend of Korra.

The first time I watched Legend of Korra, I thought Asami was just a pretty face and luscious hair to get in between Korra and Mako. She’s a rich daddy’s girl and that just didn’t rub anyone the right way. While she does play that role, she also has a lot of qualities that I think get overlooked and I want to set the record straight. Asami deserves some respect.

Beyond her capability to fight, I think Asami is a very grounded character, especially when it comes to her relationship with Mako and his relationship to Korra. I kept expecting some sort of catty confrontation telling Korra to stay away from her man but Asami never made any unfounded assumptions. Even after Ikki spilled the beans about Korra liking Mako, Asami didn’t accuse Korra of undermining her relationship.

Furthermore, she has extremely strong moral values to have abandoned her father for Team Avatar, especially since she is a daddy’s girl. She had one parent growing up and she had to let go of him because of his misguided view on bending. I think that took a lot of strength. Even after she finds out that Mako also has feelings for Korra, she does not take out her feelings on the team by leaving. She stays despite feeling betrayed because she knows fighting Amon is important.

Her behaviour throughout the entire season has been extremely mature and not the catty bullshit I’ve come to expect. Most people (myself included) would name Korra to be the coolest female character but Asami shouldn’t get tossed aside. She has a lot going for her and she’s still a strong character who plays an important role in the fight against Amon. She put her feelings second because the political state was more pressing.

Good on you, Asami.

I can’t wait to see how her character develops, now that they’ve been picked up for another season.

    I really loved Asami!

She was such a fantastic character, and she always surprised me. I always thought she would end up being the enemy somehow, especially once Mako’s feelings for Korra came out. It was so refreshing to have a character like Asami kick down all the stereotypes!
