Batman Nail Art

Have you seen The Dark Knight Rises yet? It’s pretty baller, and I’ve noticed it’s got people into all things batty. Allow me to indulge your mania.

My parents are deeeaaaadddd!

You’ll need:

  • Black nail polish
  • Yellow nail polish
  • A flesh-tone polish
  • A tooth pick
  • Black striper OR black polish with a toothpick
  • White striper OR white polish with a toothpick
  • A dotting tool OR bobby pin

First, paint your thumbnail yellow. For all of your other fingers, paint the first 3/4 of the nail black. The black will become his mask.

Next, add a small dollop of black ink to the top corners of  the mask and use the toothpick to draw them out to make bat ears.

Now take your flesh tone polish and drop a blob onto a piece of scrap paper. If you don’t have a flesh tone you can make it by mixing a bit of brown and white on scrap paper (stir with a toothpick). Take your dotting tool and draw a trapezoid on the bottom of the mask for the exposed part of Bruce’s face.

Now we’ll work on the bat symbol on your thumb. Get out your striper and start off with big parentheses.

Next draw an outline of the bat symbol.

It’s easiest to draw the points and then connect them. I clearly didn’t use a reference because my bat symbol is wrong and more complicated than it needed to be. Here’s what it actually looks like:

Now colour it all in! I used my striper, but if you don’t have one it will probably be easiest to use a dotting tool for the wide parts and get into the points with a toothpick.

Mr. Wayne needs a face. Use a black striper to give him a frown because his parents are dead. For the eyes, you have two options! My first try was to give him googly eyes which are kind of comical. Do this by using your dotting tool and giving him two big white circle eyes. If you’re using a bobby pin, turn it around and use the smaller end for the next step. Dip your dotting tool into black polish and give him smaller black dots for pupils.

Or you can make him look a bit more like the cartoon by using your white striper and giving him slits or upside down triangles for eyes.

Add a top coat to make it last longer, and you’re all done! Now go clean up the streets of Gotham.
